Your swimming pool is probably used primarily in the spring and summer months. With a pool heater, you can maybe push your pool usage into the fall months as well, although this can get costly to run. Regardless of when you're using it, your swimming pool needs to be properly maintained to ensure you will be able to use it year after year. Your swimming pool can last a very long time if it's properly maintained. Read on for some of the maintenance tasks for every season you should be doing.
Spring
In the spring, you are usually first opening your pool for the beginning of the swimming season. When you open your pool, you need to remove all of the leaves and other debris from the pool cover. Then drain any water that is left on the top. Carefully remove the cover, then set it aside to clean, dry, and put away for use in the fall. Once your pool is uncovered, you need to re-attach the water lines, the main components, and turn the power back on. Finally, you are going to need to add water and the proper chemicals to the pool. Spring is also a time when there are a lot of buds falling from the trees, be sure to skim the top of the pool often to remove these buds and other debris.
Summer
Summer is when your pool will get the most use. Be sure you are keeping a close eye on your water level, as all of that splish-splashing can cause your water level to go down. Your water should be up to at least the middle of your skimmer opening. Also, keep a close eye on the chemical levels in your water. If you don't keep enough of the right chemicals in the water, you may be swimming in unsafe water. Use a water testing kit often on your pool, and vacuum your pool often as well.
Fall
Fall is about the time you will be putting your pool away until next spring. Add the right amount of chemicals, and get that old cover back out. Be sure the cover doesn't have any holes in it, to prevent any debris or water from getting into your pool. Once it's covered and all of the hoses and components are put away, you need to keep a close eye on the cover to ensure it stays put all fall and winter long.
Winter
Throughout winter, your cover will accumulate with leaves leftover from fall, water, ice, and snow. Try to keep your pool cover as clear as possible, if it gets too heavy, it can end up caving your pool in. Watch your pool all winter long and inspect the cover for issues.
If your pool isn't maintained properly, you may end up with a busted swimming pool before the beginning of pool season next year. To learn more about swimming pool maintenance, contact a professional.
